PRESS
Press, largely based on debut single, "Anger Tango".
"Nevada Nevada’s sound is a swirl of Americana noir and artful indie rock, indulging in the menace and whimsy that coexist in both and getting a boost from the powerful personality of singer Kathryn Musilek."- Indy Week
“ ‘Anger Tango’ is a bold female-fronted roots/rock song, with visceral rhythms and swaggering vocals… [and] is immediately impressive on the ears both in sound and message. “I’ll see you when you fall…” warns Musilek. “Yes I’m angry, as I should be.” Hear hear.”- Audiofemme
“The haunting track strikes with throwback familiarity - a multi-layered approach to it's instrumentation. There's a lot going on, and it sorta strikes me as the potential title theme for a non-existent indie-rock JAMES BOND film with a Shirley Bassey-vibe to the vocals.”- The Rock Father
"Kathryn Musilek was born in Nevada, Iowa, where she learned to play guitar, bass, and piano while developing her impressive songwriting abilities. Eventually she moved to Brooklyn where she founded Nevāda Nevada, and “Anger Tango” is their dazzling and dizzying debut single. Its burly cacophony is reminiscent of Bone Machine, and while guitars crash that fiddle cuts a scorching swath through the fields. This is so very good."- The Autumn Roses
“Blending noir folk, Americana, and art rock, the single is a dark, mysterious, yet catchy track that would be great for a Halloween party.”- The Revue
"...fans of Gotan Project and Beirut will be way into this. Surprising and unexpected: Amanda Palmer fans will also be really into the vocalist and the overall arch vibe of the track."- Independent Clauses
"Anger Tango" included in 2015 Best Tracks – Heartbreaking Bravery
Biography
"If your band is just straight white guys then you need some new members"
So says Kathryn Musilek. She fronts Nevāda Nevada, a rock band from New York City. Now is a strange time to be a rock band, and a strange time in general. Rock bands are considered nearly obsolete in music today and yet, are needed now more than ever, like the ERA and journalism. Rock music is a voice of the people and a way that we all get together. For a woman, fronting a rock band has always been a radical feminist act and now is no exception (of the 600 songs comprising the Billboard Hot 100 for the years 2012-17 only 22.4% of performing artists, 12.3% of songwriters, and 2% of producers were women)*.
The first song on Nevāda Nevada's debut "Wild and Glowing" is titled "900 Days", it begins:
If I survive the next 900 days
with you holding me in the way
Of the world you're set to betray...
This is a song about defying anyone standing in the way of anyone doing anything. It is about how the personal is political is personal. It is about how ridiculous it is that it is still a radical act to be a woman fronting a rock band or leading anything. It is also about six minutes of rock music that is heavy as a full barrel of molasses, all crashing piano (played by Musilek), slashing guitars, seismic drums and claws out. Kathryn is backed vocally by the band's own "Angry Lady Chorus" as well as a mean set of strings. The song is, in the words of producer Andrew Gerhan, what "November Rain" might sound like if it wasn't corny. Gerhan shares guitar and bass duty with Alicia Berbenick and Davie Olsen drums. "Wild and Glowing" is the band's debut EP (preceded by the single "Anger Tango") and is six songs of heavy, melodic, angry rock and roll played by an unabashedly loud women and her band which, in today's world, may be a worthwhile thing to behold.
